AKC lists a 10–18 year life expectancy across Poodle varieties.

The Poodle's elaborate show coat can hide what the breed fundamentally is: an intelligent, athletic dog with strong training potential. Size changes household logistics, but the basic expectation of mental engagement remains relevant across Standard, Miniature and Toy varieties.

Temperament and intelligence

Poodles are often quick learners and highly aware of their people. That makes them excellent candidates for obedience, tricks, scent games and dog sports.

Intelligence is not the same as automatic good behavior. A bored clever dog can learn nuisance patterns just as efficiently as useful skills.

Exercise

Standard Poodles can be serious athletic companions. Miniature and Toy Poodles need regular activity too, scaled appropriately for body size and health.

Mix physical activity with training and problem solving rather than trying to exhaust the dog through repetitive high-impact exercise.

Grooming

This is the ownership commitment many people underestimate.

Poodle hair continues to grow and requires regular brushing and professional or competent home grooming. Short pet clips reduce daily coat complexity but do not eliminate the need for clipping, ear/nail care and mat prevention.

"Low shedding" does not mean "maintenance-free" or guaranteed hypoallergenic for every person.

Training and household life

Reward-based training typically works well. Poodles often enjoy close interaction and can adapt to a range of households when their exercise and grooming needs are met.

Choose the variety based on more than apartment size. Consider fragility around children, exercise goals, travel, grooming cost and the physical handling required.

Health

Use the current variety-specific parent-club health recommendations rather than assuming all Poodles need identical screening.
