How to Measure Your Dog
Use a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string you then measure with a ruler). Your dog should be standing squarely.
- Girth (chest): Measure the widest part of the chest, just behind the front elbows. Keep the tape snug but not tight—you should be able to fit two fingers underneath.
- Neck: Measure around the base of the neck where a collar would sit naturally.
- Weight: Weigh your dog, or use your last veterinary weight. If between sizes, weight can help decide.
Fit Check After Purchase
Once the harness arrives, check the fit:
- Two-finger rule: You should be able to slip two fingers between the strap and your dog’s body at the neck and girth.
- No rubbing behind elbows: The girth strap should sit behind the elbow, not on the elbow fold. Watch for chafing after walks.
- No shoulder or breathing restriction: The front chest panel should not press on the shoulders or restrict movement. The dog should breathe normally with no coughing or gagging.
- Secure but not tight: The harness should not rotate or slip over the head, but it should not dig in or leave red marks.
Troubleshooting
If your dog falls between two sizes, most manufacturers recommend sizing up for comfort, unless your dog is narrow-bodied and a smaller size prevents slipping. If your dog is between sizes and the girth and neck measurements fall in different size brackets, follow the girth measurement—it is the most critical for fit and safety. For dogs with deep chests (e.g. Greyhounds, Whippets) or barrel chests (e.g. Bulldogs), look for breed-specific harnesses.
